The White Sands National Monument, a unique Federal
playground. A 275 sq-mi dazzling desert, its sand
is not ordinary silica or quartz, but crystallized
gypsum. The southwest wind piles the sand up in 60-ft-high
dunes, pushes it along a 30-mi front towards Alamogordo
at the rate of eight inches a year.
