January 27, 1944 - Turkeys Cooked for Christmas (1943)


"We had turkey alright and I had my share, but when two turkeys have to go around to thirty I sort of let them have the best. Funny how no one appreciates a cook. The papers meant the servicemen in the states I guess..."

"...Over here one hardly knew it was Easter. No celebrations at all and if no one would remind me I'd believed it weren't till the following week. Lose all idea of time since we know we shan't be going any place in particular. Wonderful feeling to know a war can't last forever even though it does seem to be lasting for ages..."

"...Well sis all's well except that I must admit of once again becoming dissatisfied. Not with the Navy or even a war-but with being a cook. The last straw came out when I was called a "Dame", or "Dearie" and above all "Cookie"..."
