March 18, 1944 (V-Mail) - Speaking the Language
Tunis, Tunisia or Somewhere in the Naples, Italy Area

"...These past two weeks have proved a complete disaster as far as my writing any letters are concerned. Lately we'd been on the go and as I said before out at sea there are no post offices...I am in strange ways having a bit of fun. It's a bit different from the kind we had at home...Really surprising how one learns a language if one puts his mind to it. Can speak enough Italian now to pass for an alien. Seriously I can now carry on a conversation and understand enough to get me by. Since I've been over here, I've learned a bit of French, a bit more Italian and even have an opportunity once in awhile of putting my broken Polish to use...Come to think of it I even know about three phrases of German. Boy! wait till I hit around Berlin..."
